Look, I’ll always be honest with you.

Buffalo Sabres playoff fever has taken over.

It’s basically my whole personality at this point.

I could make a metaphor connecting team-building in the NHL and our work in technology recruiting.

And we will do that…next week. Brenda Czyz is my guest on our next podcast episode, and we make plenty of talent acquisition comparisons throughout the show.

See you Tuesday for episode 3 of the podcast?

But as we were preparing for that, Brenda and I sat with ourselves for a minute and considered which Sabres player — past or present — best represents our work style.

Part of what makes this Sabres team so special is the collection of individuals who fill varied, but very much needed, roles:

  • Rasmus Dahlin, the superstar and the engine driving play at both ends of the ice

  • Tage Thompson, the finisher who is a threat to score a big goal every time he touches the puck

  • Alex Tuch, the hometown hero who would do anything to help the team succeed.

  • Josh Doan, the new kid on the block who worked his way to fan-favorite status.

  • Zach Benson, the self-proclaimed dog with a tireless work ethic and a happy-go-lucky personality

  • Jason Zucker, the talented veteran who sets the culture every day with his energy

I could go on and on down the lineup.

The point to be made here is that an effective team requires the curation of talented individuals whose unique skills complement each other, plus leaders who know how to draw the best out of each of those individuals.

At Lighthouse, each of our team members took the Kolbe A assessment to analyze and compare our unique work styles. The assessment isn’t a measure of specific talents as much as it is about individuals’ habits and tendencies. It measures across four facets of work:

  • Fact Finder: To what degree do you analyze and gather information before making a decision?

  • Follow Through: Are you more likely to multitask and bounce between activities, or build systems and complete tasks methodically?

  • Quick Start: Do you move quicker or slower when dealing with complexity and uncertainties?

  • Implementor: Do you do your best work when you design systems, or do you prefer to work in existing systems?

Our team has a lineup, and we each have our own unique traits and tendencies that we bring to the work.

And I think that’s part of why we love this year’s Sabres team so much:

Because the team has individuals with such a range of styles and skills, each of us can see a part of ourselves in this team. We feel a little bit closer to the team, so we cheer a bit harder. (Okay, a LOT harder).

We’re all on the wagon. Let’s keep enjoying the ride. Go Sabres!

Speaking of Brenda, this week’s a big one for her as we mark her 8-year anniversary with Team Lighthouse! As our HR and talent services leader, she wears many hats. Our team and our clients appreciate her tireless work ethic, and her willingness to share what she knows — rooted in a desire to help others.

Thanks for being part of Team Lighthouse, BC.
